GOTHIC INFLUENCES: TV

By the 1960s Tv series such as The Addams Family and The Munsters were on the air. They used typical gothic stereotypes and images of Dracula-like characters to create a 'camp' comedy.

The Munsters
The Munsters is an American TV sitcom depicting the him life of a family of monsters. The series was a mixture of traditional monster movies and the typical wholesome family sitcom. The family was portrayed as average working class, with the father Herman as the sole bread-winner and mother Lily making most of the household decisions. Although the appearance of the family being pretty odd, the show followed the typical family sitcom formula - "the bumbling, well-meaning father, the practical mother, the eccentric live-in relative and the precious child."

The appearances of the family members were based on the classic monsters of Universal Studios, except Marilyn of course. Universal produced The Munsters so were able to use these characters without breaching copyright.

The Addams Family
The Addams Family is an American TV sitcom based on the characters in Charles Addams' New Yorker cartoons. The series ran at the same time as it's rival The Munsters. Contrary to the The Munsters, The Addamses were humans with decidedly macabre interests. The family were very wealthy, residing in their gloomy, ornate mansion, attended by their servants.
There have been many spin-off series of the Addams Family, as well as re-makes for film. The Addams Family (1991) Movie and The Addams Family Values (1993) are my personally my favourites. If my father had gotten his own way I would have been called Wednesday too.
